To ensure the utmost diversity, Magellan obtains marine microbiological samples from distinct geographical locations and ecosystems around the world, including:

• Shallow reefs
  
• Marine caves
  
• Artic and Antarctic
  
• Deep ocean sediments
  
• Tropical and temperate water samples

Additionally, each organism in Magellan's microbial collection is fermented under multiple proprietary growth conditions, specifically selected to maximize the diversity of metabolites which are produced. These techniques lead to an increase in the number of chemical species produced from each sample.
